Gerhard Richter started making large abstract paintings in the 1970s, they were rough, sketchy and had a blurring effect. The paint was applied with a brush but was also applied in different ways, either smeared, dripped or rubbed with brushes, knives or other materials. Although the paintings Abstract Picture is blurred, the shapes and forms suggest the existence of an original image beneath it. A picture taken of this piece at the early stage of its creation shows that it started as a clear image and Richter had proceeded to turn it into a much sombre and distressed image, even scratching through the paint which creates a similar effect to a photographic blur; although some critics claim it has a strong sensation of urban life. The number 726 that accompanies it refers to its placement within Richter’s worklist.
